Two American translators, Sheila Malovany-Chevallier & Constance Borde, living in France created history in the literary circles by translating the entire masterpiece of Simone de BeauvoirThe Second Sex in 2009. This was the first time a complete translation has been done. The earlier English translation done in 1953 had thirty percent of the book missing.
They will participate in the Hyderabad Literary festival 2012, to discuss the challenges of translating Beauvoir’s text and their work to render its philosophical complexity.
Hyderabad Literary festival (HLF) was started as an annual event last year (2010-2011) with the successful conduct of its inaugural edition in December. HLF is primarily aimed at showcasing Hyderabad as an important literary center of the country with its rich cultural history and tradition.
HLF is organized by Muse India, the highly acclaimed Hyderabad- based literary e-journal and the Dept of Tourism of Govt. of A.P. in patnership with Osmania University and several cultural organizations of the city. Germany will be the featured nation at HLF 2012.
Both Sheila and Constance have been living in France for over 40 years, teaching literature and American civilization. They have had long teaching careers at School Political Science and all along they have been translating from French to English: social science, art and feminist writings. Feminism and politics, as well as understanding and knowledge of France and it’s culture, led them to the translation of Le Deuxieme Sexe, by Simone de Beauvoir into English.
