ABOUT THE ARTIST
Manu Chao, born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao on June 21, 1961, in Paris, France, is a dynamic musician known for his diverse musical style and socially conscious lyrics. His journey began in the lively Parisian music scene, where he absorbed influences from punk, rock, reggae, and salsa. In 1987, he co-founded the band Mano Negra, blending genres seamlessly and gaining international recognition with albums like Patchanka (1988) and Casa Babylon (1994). After Mano Negra disbanded in 1995, Chao launched a successful solo career, releasing groundbreaking albums such as Clandestino (1998) and Próxima Estación: Esperanza (2001), continuing to explore new musical frontiers while tackling social and political themes. Drawing inspiration from street music and bar scenes worldwide, he later formed Radio Bemba Sound System, collaborating with musicians from Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina to create a rich, global fusion of sounds.
