Pierre Thilloy with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan and the Symphony Orchestra of Avignon and KORD (electronic orchestra).

«Connecting the fundamental principles of two musical cultures: sharing heritage, exploring horizons »

Called “musician of the world”, Pierre Thilloy is however not an explorer of music. Notwithstanding his multiple experiences, he creates original works accessible to all. Having spent his years in Paris at the Conservatory of Nancy where he began his musical study, Pierre Thilloy went to the Conservatory in Luxembourg and later in Austria at the Mozarteum of Salzbourg. A prolific composer, Pierre’s official catalogue comprises more than 180 compositions including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, symphonic poems, mass, oratorios and even the accompanying score for silent films. His power is soul inspired and that’s what gives his work authenticity.

His interaction with the cultures of the world began in Africa and took him to Central Asia especially, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Such meetings with musical cultures so different from his own nourished his work. His next stop was India in 2010 where he had his first taste of a vast and ancient musical tradition with divine origins and a metaphysical quality. During this visit he met with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the grand maître of the sarod and with whom he began a close collaboration.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is one of the greatest masters of the sarod. Amjad Ali Khan learnt sarod under his father Haafiz Ali Khan’s tutelage, a musician to the royal family of Gwalior. He developed a unique style of playing the sarod. He has performed in different parts of the world (New Zealand, UK, USA, China…) and is the recipient of many awards and honours and continues to be one of the busiest classical musicians in India today. From this meeting was born a project of writing a concerto based on an Indian raga. Founded on the fundamental principles of Indian music and its origins as well as the execution of a raga, this work, composed and directed by Pierre Thilloy will be interpreted by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ayaan and Amaan Ali Khan and the Symphony Orchestra of Avignon as well as the electronic music group KORD.
